2005 Florida Dual Meet

The Wrestling Club finished second in the State Dual Meet Championship held last weekend. The Wrestling Knights defeated FSU in their first dual by a score of 54-3. The next dual was against The University of Florida and the Knights picked up another win beating the Gators 38-7.  Then the Knights took on the USF Bulls and won 51-3. With a daily record of 3 wins and 0 losses, the Knights wrestled Pensacola Christian College to determine which team would be the dual champions. The Knights wrestled hard, but were unable to continue their winning streak losing to Pensacola Christian College 19-23.

Top performers for the Knights are David Miller, Zach Sanford, and Mike Lemieux who all finished the tournament with four wins. Captain David Miller led the way by winning three of his matches by pins.

The Knights have continued to show improvement throughout the season despite the loss to Pensacola Christian College.   This weekend the Knights will compete in UNC- Chapel Hill’s “Rumble on Hill” to close out the semester’s competition.  This tournament will feature many of the top NCAA programs of the Southeast.

Georgia Tech Open 2005

The wrestling club competed in the Georgia Tech Open this past weekend. Though the tournament proved to be a wake-up call to some of the wrestlers, two veteran wrestlers lead the team during the tournament. Team captain David “BooBoo” Miller (133 lbs) and Jimmy Myers (184 lbs) dominated their opponents. David was undoubtedly the best wrestler in his weight division as he collected four wins (three of which were pins) to finish the tournament in 1st place. Jimmy continued to control his opponents throughout the tournament but failed to collect the win in his final match and ended the tournament in 2nd place.

Freshmen Willie Rothenberg (133 lbs) wrestled well and finished in 4th place. He will be an essential asset to the team as the season progresses. Carlos Anglero also finished in fourth 4th place at heavyweight.

“We have a long way to go before we are as good as last year. Our conditioning level is low and we have a lot of young wrestlers this year. However, we have a lot of potential, and I think it is only a matter of time before we prove that we are the best team in the NCWA,” stated captain David Miller.

The Georgia Tech open was a pre-season tournament that had about 180 athletes competing, a 20% increase from last year. While it appeared to be a tough tournament for most of the wrestlers from Central Florida, this pre-season event was a perfect wake-up call. “It made us aware of our weaknesses, and other things we need to work on. This is the best time to see what our strengths are and what needs more work. I just hope we can pull everything together in a couple weeks when we wrestler in the Central Florida Open,” commented Jimmy Myers.

The wrestlers will have a two-week break and then compete in the Knights Brawls Duals on November 4th and the Central Florida Open on November 5th at UCF.

2005 - 2006 Season Outlook

09/24/2005 -

Finishing the 2004 and 2005 season as the NCWA National Champions, the Golden Knights hope for another outstanding finish in 2006. Two-time NCWA “Coach of the Year,” Johnny Rouse, will lead the Knights this season followed by assistant coaches: Scott Sherman, and Jason Snow. Two former wrestlers have also joined the coaching staff: Tom Lawlor who finished 3rd in the 2002 season and became a 3 time National Champion in 2003, 2004, and 2005 at the 235-pound weight division, and Jason Balma who finished 5th in 2004 and 4th in 2005. The Knights have shown improvement with every season finishing 8th in 2002, 4th in 2003, and becoming back-to-back National Champions in 2004 and 2005.

Along with the leadership provided by an outstanding coaching staff, the Knights also have capable leaders on the mat. Captains Paul Rothenberg (3rd in 2004 and 5th in 2005 at 133 pounds) and David Miller (3rd in 2003, 2nd in 2004, and 2nd in 2005 at 125 pounds) accept the challenge of capturing another National Championship title.

Miller and Rothenberg, will be joined by other returning All-Americans including: Matt Bohren (5th in the 141-pound division), Brian Guider (6th in the 157-pound class in 2004), and Jimmy Myers (4th in the 184-pound division).

The Knights enter the 2006 season with a handful of returning NCWA National qualifiers who did not place in 2005. Some extremely talented recruits will also accompany the returning National qualifiers. Ryan Reid, Willie Rothenberg, Freddy Carosio, Nicholas Miller, Seve Hewitt, Ramsay Wade, and Jonathan Buhring are just a few of the new wrestlers who hope to fill the holes in the line-up. The Golden Knights lost six All-Americans including three 2005 champions: Todd Hauser (2-time national champion in the 197-pound division), Tom Lawlor (3-time national champion in the 235-pound division) and Jarren Williams (national champion in the 285-pound division).

Accomplishing two National titles has not come without sacrifice; it requires a combination of hard work, dedication, and commitment. The Knights will strive to continue the winning traditions set in the previous years. The Golden Knights nights have become the standard for teams in the NCWA, that standard has placed the Knights on top of the NCWA world.
